    WordPress

    WordPress is an open-source content management system based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 27.5% of the top 10 million websites as of February 2017 and is reportedly the most popular website management or blogging system in use on the Web,  supporting more than 60 million websites.

    Features

    WordPress features integrated link management; a search engine–friendly, clean permalink structure; the ability to assign multiple categories to posts; and support for tagging of posts. Automatic filters are also included, providing standardized formatting and styling of text in posts like for example, converting regular quotes to smart quotes. WordPress also supports the Trackback and Pingback standards for displaying links to other sites that have themselves linked to a post or an article. WordPress posts can be edited in HTML, using the visual editor, or using one of a number of plugins that allow for a variety of customized editing features.

    Joomla

    Joomla is an open-source content management system for publishing web content. It is built on a model–view–controller web application framework that can be used independently of the CMS. Joomla is written in PHP, uses object-oriented programming techniques and software design patterns, stores data in a MySQL, MS SQL, or PostgreSQL database, and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, search, and support for language internationalization. As of November 2016, Joomla has been downloaded over 81 million times. Over 7,800 free and commercial extensions are available from the official Joomla Extensions Directory, and more are available from other sources.

    Drupal

    Drupal is an open-source content-management framework written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License, provides a back-end framework for at least 2.3% of all web sites worldwide ranging from personal blogs to corporate, political, and government sites.  Systems also use Drupal for knowledge management and for business collaboration. As of April 2017 the Drupal community is composed of more than 1.3 million members, including 106,650 users actively contributing, resulting in more than 37,110 free modules that extend and customize Drupal functionality, over 2,445 free themes that change the look and feel of Drupal, and at least 1,116 free distributions that allow users to quickly and easily set up a complex, use-specific Drupal in fewer steps. Drupal runs on any computing platform that supports both a Web server capable of running PHP and a database to store content and configuration.

    Other Platforms

    SilverStripe

    SilverStripe is another PHP CMS that behaves much like WordPress, except has many more configurable options and is tailored towards content management, and not blogging. It was built upon its very own PHP framework Saphire. It also provides its own templating language to help with the design process. Composr is a very flexible CMS with advanced social, interactive and dynamic functionality.

    Concrete5

    Concrete5 is an open-source content management system for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets, designed for ease of use, for users with a minimum of technical skills. It enables users to edit site content directly from the page. It provides version management for every page, it also allows users to edit images through an embedded editor on the page.

    Composr is a combination of a Web content management system and Social Networking software, very flexible CMS with advanced social, interactive and dynamic functionality. Hundreds of features are available out of the box, as well as building blocks, and further addons (think multi-channel content delivery).

    Phire CMS

    Phire CMS is a simple and robust CMS that is built on the Pop PHP Framework. By itself, it provides very basic features and functionality for user and user role management, as well as module installation and management. The module functionality is where the strength of Phire lies. With it, you can install any of the pre-written modules, or write ones of your own and easily extend the functionality of Phire.

    Magento

    Magento is an open-source e-commerce platform written in PHP.  It employs the MySQL/MariaDB relational database management system, the PHP programming language, and elements of the Zend Framework. It applies the conventions of object-oriented programming and model–view–controller architecture.

    Magento also uses the entity–attribute–value model to store data. On top of that, Magento introduced the Model-View-ViewModel pattern to its front-end code using the JavaScript library Knockout.js which provide new ways to heighten user engagement, smooth navigation, improve conversion rates and overall revenue generation for store owners. It has well-organized business user tools that enhance the user experience of the software.

    Prestashop

    PrestaShop is an open source e-commerce solution. The software is published under the Open Software License (OSL). It is written in the PHP programming language with support for the MySQL database management system.

    PrestaShop is currently used by 250,000 shops worldwide and is available in 60 different languages.

    PrestaShop has more than three hundred built-in features for managing product listing, payments, shipping, manufacturers and suppliers. PrestaShop uses a web template system which allows users to customize store themes and add new features through add-on modules.

    Shopify

    Shopify is a complete ecommerce solution that allows you to set up an online store to sell your goods. It lets you organize your products, customize your storefront, accept credit card payments, track and respond to orders — all with a few clicks of the mouse.

    Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company, founded in 2004, that develops computer software for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems and was initially based on earlier software written by its founders for their online snowboard store.  The company reports that it has more than 377,500 merchants using its platform, with total gross merchandise volume exceeding $15 billion.

    osCommerce osCommerce is a simple and a straightforward e-commerce and online store-management software written in PHP and stores data in a MySQL database. osCommerce’s most recent product is the Online Merchant v2, a comprehensive self-hosted online store platform that comes with both a catalog frontend and an administration tool backend.

    X-Cart is an e-commerce platform software that has been continuously improving over the years. It supports tons of eCommerce features either out of the box or as a ready-made extension. It offers both a downloadable self-hosted licensed software option that you can buy and install on a server and a cloud-based cart, hosted by themselves, yet with your full access to the code for customization.

    OpenCart is an open-source shopping cart built on PHP/MySQL code. Distributed as a free eCommerce solution, OpenCart is a very user-friendly and effective platform that comes with a very intuitive and user-friendly interface as well as a higher selection of extensions. Perfect for small businesses and medium-sized ecommerce stores, OpenCart is loaded with all the basic functions a user would need from an ecommerce solution.
